Thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition in which shortened or tightened muscles of the neck and chest area cause restrictions in the blood or nerve supplies to the arms. The bony structures involved are usually the first rib and the collar bone. The muscles generally involved are the Scalenes, Pectoralis minor and major, and Subclavius. This syndrome covers a broad spectrum of conditions and you should consult with your therapist or physician on the details of your situation. In general, until your therapy has resolved this condition, there are steps you can take that will help diminish your symptoms and aid in recovery.
No sleeping on the stomach.
Lie on the unaffected side with a pillow under the upper arm or lie on your back with pillows under the arms.
Do not work with the arms above shoulder level.
No carrying heavy items.
While driving, keep hand low and relaxed.
Avoid stressful situations, which can cause increased muscle tension.
If you are female, wide bra straps can help, or use strapless bras.
