Does Rainy Weather Really Have An Effect On Joint Pain?

There is still no definitive answer for this question. However, it is not an old wives tale when your joint pains increase with rainy weather, just like it may with grandma and grandpa. So what is it about the rain and your body? Well, here are the facts that need to be considered, follow along:

  • The body part(s) affected by rainy weather are either chronically or acutely inflamed or injured (through trauma, surgery or disease)...
  • The inflammation causes an increase in water content within the injured structure(s)...
  • Water is the largest component of the body (making up between 45 and 75% of body weight)...
  • Rain causes an increase in humidity and pressure in the surrounding environment...
  • Increased pressure against the injured areas squeezes that area, now more swollen than usual, and creates pain in a similar way that pressing your hand against an injured body part would do.

Physical Therapy treatment for these conditions are certainly indicated. If the pain is due to a specific injury or surgery then we can frequently completely resolve the problem. If the pain is due to chronic disease, for example rheumatoid arthritis, treatments can control the pain but will never cure it.
