High heels place a distinct mechanical strain not just on your ankles but on your hips, knees and lower back. By elevating your heels above the level of your toes you are displacing your body weight forward, like the leaning tower of Pisa. To compensate, your body must position itself to bring the weight back to a neutral position. This is usually accomplished by arching the multiple bones that make up your lower back. The higher the heel, the greater the compensation, the greater the potential pain. Many women with this type of pain report wearing heels almost every day at work and even frequently on weekends. Many women have been doing this since as far back as junior high school. Additionally, many are uncomfortable in flat shoes or even slight lifts because of calf tightness. Physical therapy is beneficial in helping you overcome the pain from back pain related to high heels
